I went to see Wild Flag last night: Carrie Brownstein (of Sleater-Kinney), Mary Timony (of Helium, The Mary Timony Band), Janet Weiss (of Sleater-Kinney, Quasi) and Rebecca Cole (of The Minders). It was sort of exciting since no one at the show even knew what they sounded like. They never put out a record before they decided to tour so the atmosphere alone was pretty intense. All we knew was that four respected women in rock got together to form a potentially AMAZING band. Earlier in the week before their tour began, the band tweeted "We could be a polka band for all you know!" and they were totally right. I had an idea of what it might sound like, and I think I was pretty right on. It was exactly a clash of what to expect from Mary Timony (all psychadelic jam) and Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss (both in hard rockin' bands). Psychadelic-jam-rock with a lot of energy. I'm not completely sold on them just yet, but the fact that this was their first tour and their first time playing their songs for anyone gives them a break. Along with the fact that all four women in the band are completely amazing at what they do. The energy is definitely there. Plus, you could just tell they were having a great time together which can make any band awesome and fun to see.
This was my favorite song of the night. Unfortunately, I only got this short clip:
Here they are at the Doug Fir in Portland Oregon:

Speaking of drugs...
So yesterday after getting trippy on psychedelic rock, I started listening to The Warlocks. That's when I got to thinking about 60's inspired jam bands. Which incidentally reminds me of standing on Sunset Blvd watching the Dandy Warhols play with a friend and her asshole of a husband. At one point I was listening in on what they were talking about when the husband looked at me and said "I thought you loved this fucking band" and then he called me a bull dyke. It was shocking - I never claimed to love the band. It was an interesting night and I'll think of it every time I hear the Dandy Warhols. Sort of fitting really since I think the Dandy Warhols are a bunch of douche bag kids (every time I see Courtney Taylor's face, I want to punch something). Unfortunately, I still like their music.

Trippin'
A good friend of mine recently inspired me to make a psychedelic mix cd. Which I did. And then never got around to actually sending because lately that's just how I roll. However, it was really fun making that mix. Psychedelic rock has definitely been making a come back as well. Did it ever really go away? Here are some of my favorites.
Explode Into Colors
Also - if you've never seen this band live, DO IT. They're so amazing.
The Donkeys
Tape Impala
Duck Tails
Apples In Stereo
The Monkees
Porpoise song was written by Carol King for the Monkee's movie Hed. It's totally tripindicular. One of my most favorite psychedelic songs ever. The Monkee's version is nearly impossible to find on youtube, so fast forward to 3 minutes in on the first video.

Lo-fi Girl Bands
I've been noticing this trend lately. Lo-fi girl bands. Lo-fi girl garage bands, punk bands, 50's inspired girl group bands. They're dreamy yet they make me want to dance. I have to say, I'm totally digging it.

I find the world so new.
The Avalanches make me wish it was day time. And sunny. And really warm. And drinking a beer and getting drunk in the sunshine with a bunch of people in the park. All of the above in San Francisco in the summer which equals paradise to me.
Also, that girl with the curly hair? Yeah. Whoa. Crush City.

Hit it, Pause it, Record it, Play
Turn It, Rewind is an outlet for my friends and I who tend to spend hours sitting alone listening to music, looking up bands, finding connections, and needing a place to post videos and talk about our newest (or oldest) finds. Say hello. Leave us feedback. Send us mixtapes.
Inspiration for the title of this blog comes from Bow Wow Wow's C30, C60, C90 Go. A song my best friend and I would listen to on repeat for hours just because the song was about stealing records and making mixtapes, which we would stay up all night doing most nights of the week.
